Product Intelligence

Nitoband SA - Self-Adhesive Sealing Tape

Product Overview

Nitoband SA is a non-woven polypropylene tape coated with highly elastic self-adhesive butyl rubber, specifically designed and developed as a superior bond breaking alternative to traditional methods for sealing critical movement zones in waterproofing applications. It is used in conjunction with Nitoproof water-based liquid applied waterproofing membranes.

Key Advantages

Nitoband SA offers several distinctive advantages:

  • Simple self-adhesive installation – No waiting time for joint sealants to sufficiently skin and cure
  • High elongation and movement capabilities – Able to withstand movement in both longitudinal and lateral directions
  • Waterproof in its own right – Offers double protection when combined with a Nitoproof water-based liquid membrane overlay
  • Self-adhesive installation – Employs self-adhesive installation with no waiting time required for joint sealants to skin and cure

Material Composition

Nitoband SA comprises:

  • Substrate: Non-woven polypropylene fleece
  • Adhesive Coating: Highly elastic self-adhesive butyl rubber
  • Protective Backing: Release film (removed during installation)

The fleece coating is designed to embed into Nitoproof water-based liquid membranes for superior adhesion and performance.

Standards Compliance

Nitoband SA has been independently tested to meet the requirements of:

  • AS/NZ 4654.1 2012 – Waterproofing membranes for external above-ground use
  • AS/NZS 4858:2004 – Wet area membranes and waterproofing standards
  • AS 3740 – Waterproofing of wet areas within residential buildings

The Nitoband SA system is suitable for use with Class I, Class II, and Class III membrane systems as per AS4858 and AS4654.

Suitable Applications

Nitoband SA is designed for:

  • Internal and external wet areas – Showers, bathrooms, and similar applications
  • Underground waterproofing applications
  • Fully immersed conditions – Permanently wet environments
  • Critical movement zones – Areas subject to longitudinal and lateral movement
  • Wall-to-wall and wall-to-floor joints – Changes of direction in building structures
  • Small expansion joint areas – Up to 25mm in width

Installation Method

Substrate Preparation

The substrate must be:

  • Suitably prepared, clean, sound, and stable
  • Free of protrusions
  • Properly primed according to substrate type

Priming Requirements

  • For porous masonry surfaces: Nitoprime 120 at approximately 7m²/L, or Nitoproof 510 at 5m²/L (more robust option)
  • For non-porous substrates (CFC, wet area timber, ceramic tile, metals, plastics): Nitoprime 115 at approximately 12m²/L

Application Process

  1. Forming corners: Cut 300-400mm lengths of Nitoband SA tape, cut a "V" section from half the width, then fold into the corner and roll securely
  2. Positioning tape: Fold the Nitoband SA tape in half along its length and carefully position along joints with a 50mm overlap onto the corner piece
  3. Membrane application: Once Nitoband SA is in place, apply the appropriate Nitoproof water-based membrane according to relevant product data sheets
