Nitoband Bond Breaker Sealing System: Technical Details, Specifications, and Features
System Overview
The Nitoband System is a superior bond breaker sealing system designed for critical joint areas in waterproofing applications. It serves as a modern alternative to traditional bond breaking methods such as sealant beads and backing rods, offering time-efficient installation and enhanced performance characteristics.
Key Features and Advantages
The Nitoband System provides several significant advantages for waterproofing applications:
- Time-efficient installation – Eliminates waiting time for joint sealants to cure and skin over
- High elongation and movement capabilities – Accommodates movement in both longitudinal and lateral directions
- Superior durability – High-strength rubber composition with exceptional water, chemical, and tear resistance
- Self-waterproofing – Waterproof in its own right, providing double protection when combined with Nitoproof water-based liquid membranes
- Simplified application – Pre-fabricated corners, pipe penetration detailing squares, and accessories streamline installation in critical sealing areas
System Composition
The Nitoband System comprises multiple components working together as an integrated solution:
Nitoband Tape – A flexible bond breaking tape measuring 120mm wide by 10m in length, featuring a nitrile butadiene rubber composition with polyester fabric carrier surface. The tape is designed for embedding into Nitoproof water-based liquid membranes and is suitable for sealing movement joints and expansion joint areas up to 25mm.
Nitoband Corners – Pre-fabricated corner sections available in three configurations:
- 270° external corners
- 90° internal corners
- Adjustable internal corners (all measuring 135mm x 135mm)
These corner pieces provide seamless high-strength elastic seals at critical junction points and are suitable for internal and external wet areas, immersed and underground applications.
Nitoband Pipe Penetration Detailing Squares – Specialized collars designed to seal around pipes and penetrations. Three size variations accommodate pipe diameters:
- Small size for pipes less than 50mm
- Medium size for pipes less than 110mm
- Large size for pipes less than 150mm
Physical Properties and Performance Specifications
The Nitoband System demonstrates exceptional technical performance across multiple testing standards:
| Property | Specification |
|---|---|
| Form | Thermoplastic elastomer with non-woven polypropylene fleece |
| Colour | Blue |
| Thickness | 0.66mm |
| Weight | 364g/m² |
| Tensile Strength (DIN EN ISO 527-3) | 25N/15mm (lateral), 120N/15mm (longitudinal) |
| Elongation at Break (DIN EN ISO 527-3) | 300% (lateral), 70% (longitudinal) |
| UV Resistance (DIN EN ISO 4892-3) | ≥500 hours |
| Moisture Vapour Resistance (DIN EN 1931) | 16m equivalent air thickness |
| Water Pressure Resistance (DIN EN 1928 Ver. B) | ≥1.5 bar |
| Burst Pressure | 2.0 bar |
| Temperature Resistance | -30°C to +90°C |
Chemical Resistance
The Nitoband System demonstrates excellent chemical resistance to a wide range of substances, as verified through 7-day room temperature storage testing:
- Lactic acid 5%
- Citric acid 100g/L
- Hydrochloric acid 3%
- Sulphuric acid 35%
- Potassium hydroxide 3% and 20%
- Sodium hypochlorite 0.3g/L
- Sea water (20g/L sea water salt)
Standards Compliance
The Nitoband System meets multiple international and regional standards:
- Complies with AS 3740
- Suitable for use with Class I, Class II, and Class III membrane systems as per AS4858 and AS4654
- Independently tested to AS/NZ 4654.1 2012 and AS/NZS 4858:2004
Design and Installation Criteria
Substrate Preparation – The substrate must be suitably prepared, clean, sound, stable, and free of protrusions. Priming is required according to substrate type with either Nitoprime 115 or Nitoprime 120.
Installation Sequence – The Nitoband Tape, corners, and accessories are installed first before applying Nitoproof water-based liquid membranes. The fleece on all system accessories is designed to be embedded into the liquid membranes to ensure full adhesion and superior sealing at critical areas.
Bond Breaker Function – The system performs as the waterproofing system bond breaker, allowing stress relief at joints and penetrations without bonding the membrane to adjacent surfaces, thereby maintaining the integrity of the waterproofing installation.
Compatibility with Membrane Systems
The Nitoband System is designed for use in conjunction with Nitoproof water-based membrane systems and is suitable for:
- Internal, external, underground, and fully immersed applications
- Water-based single-component and two-part liquid membrane systems
- Multiple membrane types including water-based polyurethane, cementitious, bituminous, and acrylic membranes
The system precludes the need for traditional sealant beads and backing rod bond breaker methods, offering superior performance and installation efficiency.
