Nitoproof 210: Bituminous Waterproofing Membrane

Product Overview

Nitoproof 210 is a single-component, water-based bituminous rubberised waterproofing membrane developed specifically for residential and commercial construction applications. This product is manufactured by Fosroc and represents a modern, environmentally conscious approach to waterproofing while maintaining excellent performance characteristics.

Key Characteristics

Material Composition

Nitoproof 210 is formulated as a water-based rubberised bitumen waterproofing membrane that combines flexibility with durability. The product features:

  • Solids content: 60%
  • Colour: Black
  • VOC content: <15g/litre (low VOC formulation)
  • Non-flammable and non-toxic

Physical Properties

The cured membrane demonstrates impressive mechanical properties:

  • Tensile strength: 1.47 MPa
  • Hardness: 50-55 Shore A
  • Elongation at break: >300%
  • Minimum dry film thickness: 1.0 to 1.3mm

Design and Application Specifications

Application Method

Nitoproof 210 can be applied using multiple techniques:

  • Roller application (12mm nap recommended)
  • Brush application
  • Standard airless sprayer (piston pump unit with 21-25 thou tip size)

The product's smooth texture and non-sag formulation make it suitable for both vertical and horizontal applications.

Coverage Rate

  • Coverage: 1.5 to 2.0 litre/m² for 2 coats
  • Coverage per unit: Each 15 litre pail covers approximately 10m² when applied at the minimum 750 microns per coat

Wet Film Thickness Requirements

  • Minimum wet film thickness per coat: 0.75mm (750 microns)
  • Total dry film thickness: 1.0 to 1.3mm
  • Design criteria: Applied in two coats of 750 microns each to achieve membrane thickness of 1.5mm wet film thickness

Application Technique

The application process requires specific directional application:

  • Nitoproof 210 is laid onto the surface continually in one direction
  • Each successive coat must be applied perpendicular to the previous coat at 90-degree angles
  • Allow 4 hours for film to dry between coats

Primary Uses and Applications

Nitoproof 210 is engineered for waterproofing in the following applications:

  • Retaining walls
  • Planter boxes
  • Building foundation walls
  • Below ground tanking structures
  • Key joints and dowel bars (serves as an effective slip layer allowing relative movement between concrete sections)
  • Waterproofing/damp proof sandwich membranes
  • Bond breaker applications at substrate junctions

Key Advantages

The product offers several distinct benefits:

  • Self-priming on most common porous substrates (eliminates need for separate primer on many surfaces)
  • Excellent cold flexibility and elongation (>300% elongation at break)
  • Root penetration inhibitor included in formulation
  • Fast drying (4-hour recoat time at 23°C)
  • Excellent resistance to ponding water
  • Low VOC formulation (<15g/litre)
  • Non-toxic and non-flammable

Drying and Curing Times

Temperature-dependent drying schedules apply:

Condition 23°C, 50% RH 10°C, 50% RH
Recoat time 4 hours 8 hours
Dry film 24 hours 48 hours
Backfilling 3 days 4 days

Surface Preparation Requirements

Priming

Nitoproof 210 is self-priming on most porous surfaces. The priming process involves:

  • Dilute Nitoproof 210 1:1 by volume with water
  • Stir until homogeneous
  • Apply using brush or roller
  • Coverage: 0.4 to 0.8L/m² depending on substrate porosity

For non-porous substrates (metals and plastics), Nitoprime 115 should be selected as an alternative primer.

Substrate Moisture

  • Nitoproof 210 should be applied to dry cementitious substrates
  • New concrete should cure for 28 days; new render finishes for 7 days
  • Application may proceed earlier if moisture content is verified as <5% (85%RH) using a Tramex CMEX5 Moisture Meter

Crack and Joint Preparation

  • Cracks larger than 2mm or structural shrinkage cracks must first be filled with flexible polyurethane sealant (Nitoseal PU250 or Nitoseal PU400)
  • Then cover with 50mm wide polyethylene tape prior to membrane application
  • Alternatively, cracks can be covered with the Nitoband Tape system

Nitoband System Integration

Nitoproof 210 works in conjunction with the Nitoband System for superior bond breaking:

  • The Nitoband System includes tape, corners (270° external and 90° internal), and pipe detailing squares
  • Provides a suitable bond breaker at all substrate junctions
  • The membrane is applied across substrate joins extending approximately 70mm on either side of the join
  • Nitoband components are embedded into wet Nitoproof 210 to create waterproof seals
  • Components can be joined via 50mm overlaps, sandwiching Nitoproof 210 between overlapping faces

Protective Requirements

Mechanical Damage Protection

In basement applications where the membrane will be backfilled, Nitoproof 210 should be protected from mechanical damage using:

  • Proofex Protection Board PP
  • Proofex Sheetdrain 81 drainage and protection sheet

Both protection systems are available from Fosroc.

Environmental Limitations

  • Not recommended for continuous water immersion
  • Not recommended as a membrane on internal walls subject to back pressure
  • Not designed as an exposed wearing course membrane
  • Must be covered and cannot be exposed to UV on a permanent basis
  • Not designed to be finished directly over with tiles, screeds, renders, or paints

Substrate Temperature Considerations

Application of Nitoproof 210 requires careful attention to surface temperature conditions rather than ambient temperature. For example:

  • Ambient temperature may be 10°C, but substrate temperature could be 0°C with frost issues
  • Similarly, ambient temperature of 26°C may correspond to substrate temperature of 36°C
  • These differences can significantly impact application success
