Nitoproof 810: Water-Based Polyurethane Waterproofing Membrane
Product Overview
Nitoproof 810 is a highly flexible, Class III water-based polyurethane waterproofing membrane manufactured by Fosroc. It is specifically designed for a wide range of waterproofing applications in the built environment, particularly in moisture-exposed areas. The product serves as an elastomeric membrane that cures through atmospheric moisture exposure to create a durable waterproof barrier.
Key Features and Advantages
Nitoproof 810 offers several distinctive advantages that make it suitable for demanding waterproofing applications:
- Highly elastomeric and flexible with excellent elastic recovery properties
- Low VOC content (less than 2g/litre), making it environmentally friendly
- Non-flammable and non-hazardous formulation
- Will not re-emulsify once cured, enabling it to handle permanently wet conditions
- Low water absorption and low water vapour transmission properties
- Excellent adhesion to properly primed surfaces
- Compatible with modified cement-based tile adhesives, screeds, and renders
- Excellent chemical resistance properties
- Australian made product

Application Design Criteria
Coverage and Film Thickness
Nitoproof 810 is designed to be applied as two coats with the following specifications:
- Total Minimum Wet Film Thickness (WFT): 1.5 mm
- Total Coverage: 1.5 litres/m²
- Minimum Dry Film Thickness (DFT): 1.0 mm
- Coverage per 15-litre drum: Approximately 10 m²
Application Methods
The membrane can be applied using:
- Thick brush application
- Roller application (preferred method)
Surface Preparation Requirements
Before applying Nitoproof 810, surfaces must meet specific preparation criteria:
- Clean, sound, and stable - free of all foreign material
- Free from: loose coatings, laitance, release agents, curing compounds, and oil/grease residues
- Moisture content: Not exceeding 5% when tested using a Tramex CMEX5 moisture meter for concrete and masonry substrates
- Screw/nail heads: Must be sealed with either Nitoseal PU250 or Nitoseal PU400 sealant
- Sheet joints: Must be covered with Nitoband Tape and associated detailing accessories or Nitoseal PU250/PU400 sealants
- Protrusions: Must be removed to prevent membrane piercing
Priming Requirements
Substrates must be primed prior to Nitoproof 810 application:
- For porous masonry surfaces: Apply Nitoprime 120 at approximately 7 m²/L, or alternatively apply Nitoproof 510 at 5 m²/L as a more robust primer option
- For non-porous substrates (CFC, wet area timber, ceramic tile, metals, plastics): Apply Nitoprime 115 at approximately 12 m²/L
Drying Times and Curing Schedule
| Phase | At 23°C, 50% RH | At 10°C, 50% RH |
|---|---|---|
| Recoat Time | 4 hours | 6 hours |
| Dry Film Development | 12 hours | 24 hours |
| Flood Test | 48 hours | 72 hours |
| Tiling/Toppings | 24 hours | 48 hours |
Suitable Applications
Nitoproof 810 is designed for the following waterproofing applications:
- Wet areas and shower alcoves – Class III Membrane System
- Podiums, terraces, balconies, and deck areas – under toppings, tiles, and other finishes
- Foot-trafficable exposed rooftop membranes and balcony decks (when overcoated with Nitoproof Top Coat UV)
- Sandwich membranes between existing and new substrates (e.g., old to new concrete; cement screeds over concrete and CFC surfaces)
- General areas exposed to moisture and damp conditions
- Internal and external wet areas enabling direct fixing of ceramic tiles, screeds, and renders over the dried membrane
Standards Compliance
Nitoproof 810 has been independently tested and verified to meet the following standards:
- AS/NZ 4654.1 2012 - Waterproofing membranes for external above-ground use (XTecGen test report 397-23)
- AS/NZS 4858:2004 - Wet Area Membrane as a Class III membrane against AS 3740:2021 Waterproofing of Wet Areas Within Residential Buildings (XTecGen test report 397-25)
- AS 4586-2013 - Slip resistance when overcoated with Nitoproof Top Coat UV and Nitoproof Top Coat EW
Limitations
Important consideration: Nitoproof 810 is UV resistant but is not designed for use as a long-term exposed membrane as a standalone product. However, when overcoated with Nitoproof Top Coat UV, the system not only protects the base membrane from UV degradation but also provides a foot-trafficable membrane system suitable for extended outdoor exposure.
Cleanup and Maintenance
- Wet state: Cleans up easily with water
- Dried state: Requires removal by Fosroc Solvent 10 or mechanical means
- Splashes on paintwork: Wipe off immediately using a cloth dampened with strong detergent solution
- Tools and equipment: Soak in strong detergent solution immediately after application
Product Supply
| Product | Size | Product Code |
|---|---|---|
| Nitoproof 810 | 15L Pail | FC000608-15L |
Storage
- Shelf Life: 18 months in original, unopened containers
- Storage Conditions: Cool, dry conditions at temperatures between 5°C and 30°C
- Temperature Impact: Storage above 30°C may reduce shelf life
Important Application Notes
When applying Nitoproof 810 or any liquid-based membrane, always refer to surface temperature conditions before commencing work, not just ambient temperatures. Surface and ambient temperatures can differ significantly, with substrate temperatures potentially being much colder (frost risk) or hotter than ambient conditions.
Recommended Practice
- Polymer-modified cement-based tile adhesive is recommended for direct adhesion to the membrane
- Nitoprime 120 is recommended within screeds and renders directly over the membrane as a waterproof and adhesion enhancer
