Nitoproof Top Coat UV: Technical Details, Specifications, Features, and Properties
Product Overview
Nitoproof Top Coat UV is a water-based acrylic hybrid hard-wearing membrane top coat specifically designed for external applications on horizontal surfaces. It replaces the previous product Emer-Proof Top Coat UV Protect and serves as a protective overcoating system that enhances and extends the performance of liquid-applied membrane systems, primarily when applied over Nitoproof 410 and Nitoproof 810 base membranes.
Primary Functions and Uses
Nitoproof Top Coat UV is engineered to provide multiple protective benefits:
- Foot-Trafficability: Allows pedestrian and light traffic on exposed surfaces, making underlying membranes suitable for maintenance walkways, exposed walkways subject to regular foot traffic, and deck and balcony areas
- UV Stability: Provides essential UV weather resistance to protect against ultraviolet degradation on UV-exposed horizontal surfaces
- Surface Protection: Suitable for roof areas, maintenance walkways, exposed roof surfaces for maintenance and access areas, and general horizontal surfaces exposed to weather
The product functions as an intermediate coating layer within a multi-coat system and can serve as a base layer over which additional protective coatings, such as Nitoproof Top Coat EW, can be applied.
Key Advantages
Nitoproof Top Coat UV offers numerous performance benefits:
- Highly durable and foot trafficable surface finish
- UV weather resistance protecting against ultraviolet exposure
- Excellent ponding water resistance providing protection against standing water on horizontal surfaces
- Resistant to fungi and algae growth
- Provides slip-resistant surface without requiring sand casting or aggregate addition
- Excellent weathering properties and durability
- Water-based and non-hazardous formulation
- Flexible (non-elastomeric) composition
- Excellent adhesion to Nitoproof 410 and Nitoproof 810 water-based membranes and primed masonry surfaces
- Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) content
Design and Application Criteria
Coverage and Film Thickness Requirements
Nitoproof Top Coat UV is optimally applied in 1 coat application:
Horizontal Applications:
- Wet Film Thickness: 800 microns
- Dry Film Thickness: 500 microns
- Minimum Coverage: 0.8 litres/m²
Vertical Applications (upturns and returns):
- Wet Film Thickness: 600 microns
- Dry Film Thickness: 350 microns
- Minimum Coverage: 0.6 litres/m²

Slip Resistance Testing Results
Nitoproof Top Coat UV has been independently tested for slip resistance using AS 4586:2013 standards with the following results:
| System Configuration | Wet Pendulum Test (Appendix A) | Dry Floor Friction Test (Appendix B) |
|---|---|---|
| Nitoproof 410 overcoated with Nitoproof Top Coat UV | P5 | D1 |
| Nitoproof 410 overcoated with Nitoproof Top Coat UV + Nitoproof Top Coat EW | P4 | D1 |
| Nitoproof 810 overcoated with Nitoproof Top Coat UV | P5 | D1 |
| Nitoproof 810 overcoated with Nitoproof Top Coat UV + Nitoproof Top Coat EW | P4 | D1 |
The slip test results show excellent performance in controlled laboratory conditions; however, reasonable variations are expected on site due to site-specific conditions and application variances.
Application Instructions
Surface Preparation
Surfaces must meet strict preparation requirements before application:
- Clean and sound: Free from loose foreign material, existing coatings, laitance, release agents, curing compounds, and oil/grease residues
- Properly dried: Surfaces must be dry and suitably prepared in a sound state before application begins
- Substrate condition: For application directly to surfaces with no previous Nitoproof membrane, Fosroc recommends always priming the substrate prior to Nitoproof Top Coat UV application
Priming Requirements
No priming is required if Nitoproof Top Coat UV is applied directly onto either Nitoproof 410 or Nitoproof 810 membranes, provided surfaces are clean and dry.
For substrate materials without existing Nitoproof membranes, primer selection is defined by substrate type:
- Porous masonry surfaces: Nitoprime 120 may be selected
- Non-porous substrates (ceramic tile, metals, plastics): Nitoprime 115 may be selected
Application Method
- Application tool: 12mm nap roller or brush
- Stirring: Nitoproof Top Coat UV membrane should be well stirred before use
- Application rate: Apply in 1 coat at minimum total coverage of 0.8 litres/m² for horizontal surfaces and 0.6 litres/m² for vertical surfaces
Drying Times
All drying times are specified at standard conditions of 23°C and 50% relative humidity:
- Recoat time: 4 hours @ 23°C; 50% RH
- Dry film development: 24 hours @ 23°C; 50% RH
- Weatherproof (horizontal surfaces): 48 hours @ 23°C; 50% RH
- Low temperature adjustment: At 10°C, allow a minimum of 24 hours extra drying time on standard recommendations
Important Note: The base membrane must be fully cured prior to Nitoproof Top Coat UV application.
Minimum Curing Before Subsequent Coatings
Nitoproof Top Coat UV must be allowed to cure adequately before applying subsequent coatings. A minimum drying time of 48 hours at 23°C is required before the application of Nitoproof Top Coat EW or other topcoats.
Cleaning and Maintenance
- Wet state cleanup: While in a wet state, Nitoproof Top Coat UV cleans up with water
- Dried product removal: Once dried, the product must be removed by mechanical means or with solvent cleaners
- Splashes on paintwork: Should be wiped off immediately using a cloth dampened with a strong detergent solution
Storage and Shelf Life
- Shelf Life: 2 years if kept in cool, dry conditions in original, unopened packs
- Storage conditions: Cool, dry storage is essential
- Temperature sensitivity: If stored at high temperatures and/or high humidity conditions, shelf life may be reduced
Important Application Notes
Surface Temperature Consideration
Application of Nitoproof Top Coat UV and all liquid-applied membranes must refer to surface temperature conditions before commencing work, not just ambient temperatures. Surface temperature may differ significantly from ambient temperature and directly affects suitability and success of application.
Example scenarios:
- Ambient temperature may be 10°C, but substrate could be 0°C with frost issues
- Ambient temperature may be 26°C, but substrate temperature could be 36°C
Limitations
- Not designed for vehicular traffic or commercial foot traffic areas (such as shopping centre entry-ways)
- Not designed for immersed applications
- On roof applications, Nitoproof Top Coat UV must be applied to surfaces with appropriate falls and drainage
Enhancement with Nitoproof Top Coat EW
Nitoproof Top Coat EW is a hybrid acrylic coating designed specifically for use over Nitoproof Top Coat UV to:
- Improve stain resistance
- Reduce scuff marks associated with pedestrian foot traffic
- Enhance durability and weathering properties
The initial semi-gloss finish forms after Nitoproof Top Coat EW application and will diminish after 10-14 days to a matt finish.
