Flamex One: Fire-Rated Acrylic Joint Sealant
Overview
Flamex One is a fire-rated, one-component, acrylic joint sealant specifically designed for low movement interior applications. It is manufactured by Fosroc and supplied in 600ml sausages, making it a convenient solution for fire-resistant joint sealing in construction projects.
Key Features and Advantages
Flamex One offers several significant advantages for construction applications:
- Economical waterborne formulation that reduces costs without compromising performance
- Easy to apply and finish with excellent workability characteristics
- Quick drying due to its waterborne composition, enabling faster project progression
- Permanently flexible and paintable after curing, allowing design flexibility
- Slump resistant and suitable for wide joints without sagging
- Up to 4-hour fire resistance when properly applied and tested
- Good adhesion to most common building materials
- Non-slump sealant properties that accommodate wide joint applications
Physical and Chemical Properties
Flamex One demonstrates the following technical characteristics:
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Form | Single part non-sag mastic |
| Colour | Concrete grey |
| Physical/chemical change | Dries by water loss |
| Application temperature | 5°C - 50°C |
| Skinning time | 20 minutes at 25°C, 50% RH |
| Cure rate | Approximately 1 mm per day at 25°C, 50% RH |
| Movement accommodation factor (MAF) | ±10% (20% total) |
| VOC content | 14.4g / litre |
Design Criteria and Joint Specifications
Flamex One is engineered for specific joint configurations:
- Joint width range: 10mm up to 20mm wide
- Ideal sealant depth: Half the width with a minimum depth of 10mm
- Joint configuration: Must be considered with reference to the required fire resistance achieved in testing
- Backing material: Expandafoam Closed Cell backing rod must be used to achieve correct joint configuration
Fire Resistance Performance
Flamex One has been tested to AS1530.4:2014 standards, with comprehensive fire test results documented in FireTSLab report PF21065. The fire resistance performance varies based on joint configuration:
AS1530.4:2014 Test Results Summary
| Joint Size | Configuration | Integrity (min) | Insulation (min) | FRL |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20mm x 20mm | Sealed fire side only | 250 | 50 | -/240/30 |
| 20mm x 10mm | Sealed non-fire side only | 250 | 107 | -/240/90 |
| 20mm x 10mm | Sealed both sides | 250 | 166 | -/240/150 |
| 20mm x 10mm | Sealed fire side only | 250 | 28 | -/240/- |
Note: Test results were achieved in joints between concrete wall panels 120mm thick.
Primary Applications
Flamex One is designed for fire-resistant interior joint sealing in diverse construction types:
- Tilt-up construction - sealing low movement interior joints
- High and low rise construction - fire-rated joint applications
- Precast and insitu concrete - joints between concrete wall panels
- Interior applications - fire-resistant sealing for building components
Application Instructions
Joint Preparation
The joint surfaces must be thoroughly prepared before application:
- Ensure joint faces are dry, clean, and frost-free
- Remove all dust, laitance, form release agents, and curing compounds by vigorous wire brushing, grinding, or grit blasting
- Remove rust, scale, and protective lacquers from metal surfaces
- Eliminate any oil or grease using Fosroc Solvent 10
Priming
- Primers are generally not required on correctly prepared surfaces
- On excessively porous surfaces, adhesion can be improved by diluting Flamex One (1:3 with water) and brushing into joint sides
Tooling
- Immediate tooling after gunning Flamex One into joints is essential
- Use a smooth tool with a slightly convex edge for proper finishing
- A small amount of water may be used to assist tooling
- Tooling forces the sealant into complete contact with joint faces, ensuring optimal adhesion
Packaging and Coverage
- Supply format: 600ml sausages in cartons of 20
- Product code: FC920025-600ML
- Coverage: Each 600ml sausage will seal approximately 2 metres of a 25mm x 12mm joint
Storage Requirements
- Store in original packaging in cool, dry conditions
- Do not exceed 25°C during storage
- Maintain proper environmental conditions to preserve product quality
Standards Compliance
Flamex One has been tested and certified to:
- AS1530.4:2014 - Fire resistance testing standard for building materials
- Specific test results documented in FireTSLab report PF21065
Copies of the full test report are available from the Fosroc website.
Important Documentation
A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is available from the Fosroc website and must be carefully reviewed prior to use, as application or performance data may change over time.
