Product Intelligence

Dekguard S: High-Performance Aliphatic Acrylic Protective Coating

Product Overview

Dekguard S is a high-performance, pigmented aliphatic acrylic protective and decorative coating engineered specifically for concrete structures exposed to harsh environmental conditions. As a solvent-based coating system, Dekguard S delivers outstanding resistance to aggressive elements, UV light, and rain, making it particularly suitable for atmospherically exposed, non-trafficked reinforced concrete structures in demanding environments.

Key Applications

Dekguard S is designed to protect concrete structures from multiple environmental threats:

  • Acid gases in atmospheric exposure
  • Chloride ions characteristic of marine and coastal environments
  • Water damage and moisture ingress
  • UV light degradation through long-term weathering effects

The product is equally suitable for both new and existing structures, including those in aggressive marine and coastal environments. Dekguard S is compatible with the Renderoc system of concrete reinstatement, enabling its use in comprehensive concrete repair and protection schemes.

Technical Specifications

Coating Properties

The Dekguard S system demonstrates exceptional protective characteristics when applied at the minimum recommended application rate:

Property Specification
Volume Solids 37%
VOC Content 781 g/litre
Carbon Dioxide Diffusion Resistance (Equivalent Thickness of Air) 378 metres
CO₂ Diffusion Coefficient 7.1 × 10⁻⁸ cm²/sec
Water Vapour Transmission Rate 21.9 g/m²/24hr
Reduction in Chloride Ion Penetration 99% (Aston University Diffusion Cell method)
Chloride Ion Diffusion Coefficient 1.0 × 10⁻¹⁴ m²/sec @ 147 days

Formulation

Dekguard S is an aliphatic acrylate, solvent-based protective coating that provides a chemically-bound hydrophobic barrier. The system relies on a two-part approach:

  • Dekguard Primer: Based on silane-siloxane, creates a chemically-bound hydrophobic barrier inhibiting water and water-borne contaminants
  • Dekguard S Coating: Highly UV-resistant aliphatic acrylic providing exceptional resistance to long-term weathering effects

Application Specifications

Design Criteria

The coating must be applied in two coats to achieve a total dry film thickness of not less than 150 microns. Correct protective properties are achieved only when Dekguard S is applied at the recommended coverage rate.

Application Rates

Component Number of Coats Application Rate Wet Film Thickness
Dekguard Primer or Nitocote SN511 Flood coat 2.5 m²/litre (0.4 litres/m²) N/A
Dekguard S 2 coats 6 m²/litre (0.167 litres/m²) per coat 175 microns minimum per coat

Overcoating Times (Temperature-Dependent)

Primer Overcoating Time Dekguard S Overcoating Time
4 hours @ 2°C 12 hours @ 2°C
2 hours @ 20°C 6 hours @ 20°C
90 minutes @ 30°C 5 hours @ 30°C

Minimum Application Temperature: 2°C (substrate temperature)

Coverage Data

Product Coverage Rate
Dekguard S 3.0 m²/litre (total for 2 coats)
Dekguard Primer 2.5 m²/litre (total)
Nitoprime DG (alternative primer for porous surfaces) 2.5 m²/litre (total)

Protective Advantages

Dekguard S provides comprehensive protective benefits:

  • Excellent barrier to carbon dioxide, chloride ions, and water penetration
  • Allows water vapour escape from protected structures, preventing trapped moisture
  • Highly UV-resistant aliphatic acrylic formulation ensuring exceptional resistance to long-term weathering effects
  • Solvent-based formulation providing superior durability in aggressive environments
  • Dual-shade availability in Concrete Grey and Bridge Grey for aesthetic flexibility

Surface Preparation Requirements

All surfaces must be dry and contamination-free prior to application:

  • Free from oil, grease, loose particles, decayed matter, moss, and algal growth
  • Free from laitance and all traces of mould release oils and curing compounds
  • Best achieved by light grit-blasting of the surface
  • Surfaces with moss, algae, or similar growths require biocide treatment after grit-blasting
  • Blowholes or pitting must be filled with Renderoc FC or Renderoc ST 06 before coating application

Application Method

Dekguard S is applied using suitable brushes, rollers, or spray equipment to achieve uniform coating and the specified wet film thickness. The first coat must be allowed to dry completely before application of the second coat.

Primer Application

Dekguard Primer (or Nitocote SN511 as an alternative) should be applied in one or more coats until the recommended application rate of 0.4 litres/m² is achieved. The primer must dry for a minimum of 2 hours at 20°C before Dekguard S application commences.

Very porous surfaces may require application of Nitoprime DG as an alternative primer, applied at the same coverage rate in continuous, multiple coats as necessary.

Product Limitations

  • The Dekguard S system is formulated for clean, sound concrete or masonry only
  • Not suitable for trafficable surfaces
  • When applied over existing coatings, performance characteristics may be impaired—compatibility trials are mandatory
  • Application must not commence if substrate temperature is below 2°C

Product Variants and Supply

Dekguard S is available in two grey color options:

Product Container Size Product Code
Dekguard S Concrete Grey 15 litres FC860623-15L
Dekguard S Bridge Grey 15 litres FC860624-15L
Dekguard Primer 20 litres FC861520-20L

Storage Requirements

Store in cool, dry conditions, away from sources of heat and naked flames, to maintain product integrity prior to application.

Cleaning and Disposal

All tools and equipment should be cleaned immediately after use with Fosroc Solvent 10 to prevent hardening of coating residues.
