Product Overview

Cemtop XD is a polymer-modified cementitious screed product engineered as a thin-layer industrial wearing course flooring system. It is specifically designed for internal areas subjected to foot and forklift traffic, providing a durable floor topping solution in industrial environments.

Product Form and Composition

Cemtop XD is supplied as a dry powder in two color formulations: grey and white. The product requires only the addition of water for preparation, making application straightforward. The cement-based floor surfacing system consists of a blend of selected cements and hard wearing aggregates modified with polymers and flow agents. These modifying agents enhance performance properties and enable the product to produce a self-smoothing, free-flowing material.

Application Range and Uses

Cemtop XD is designed for application at a minimum thickness of 6mm and maximum thickness of 12mm when used as a single layer system. It can be applied onto clean, sound, and well-prepared concrete floors that are free from loose material, oil, grease, and paint. The product is suitable across a wide range of industrial environments including:

• Food processing plants
• Car parks
• Retail environments

The product can be used either as a stand-alone system or in conjunction with Nitoflor range resin-based floor coatings depending on the end use of the floor.

Design Criteria and Substrate Requirements

Cemtop XD requires application to concrete floors meeting specific strength criteria:

• Minimum compressive strength: 25 MPa
• Surface tensile strength: exceeding 1.25 MPa

New concrete should be at least 14 days old before Cemtop XD application. When thicknesses exceeding 12mm are required, Cemtop GP underlayment is used as a base layer at a minimum thickness of 7mm beneath the Cemtop XD, creating a dual-layer system.

Physical and Performance Properties

Cure and Traffic Readiness

Cemtop XD exhibits rapid cure characteristics with well-defined readiness timelines:

• Foot traffic readiness: 2 hours @ 25°C; 4 hours @ 10°C
• Light vehicle traffic readiness: 24 hours @ 25°C; 36 hours @ 10°C
• Full cure: 28 days

Mixing and Preparation

When mixing Cemtop XD by hand mixer, use 3.1 to 3.4 litres of water per 18kg bag. Mixing should be performed using a heavy-duty mixer fitted with a suitable spiral paddle. Mixing should continue for at least 3-4 minutes until a smooth creamy consistency is obtained. The preferred method of application is by a continuous mixer pump operated by an experienced contractor trained in its use.

Application Systems

Single Layer System (Thicknesses up to 12mm)

Cemtop XD is applied as a single layer for thicknesses up to 12mm. The surface should be thoroughly prepared and primed with Nitoprime 330 diluted 1:4 primer to clean water ratio by volume, allowed to dry, and then reprimed. Cemtop XD is then applied to the required thickness onto the dry, primed surface and finished using a spike roller for a smooth surface.

Dual Layer System (Thicknesses over 12mm)

For thicknesses exceeding 12mm, Cemtop GP Advanced underlayment is used as a base layer. Cemtop XD is applied as the top 6mm layer over the underlayment after appropriate priming of the base layer.

Protective Coatings and Over-coating

Cemtop XD has good resistance to water and oils when cured. However, for areas subject to continuous water exposure or chemical attack from acids or organic solvents, the surface should be protected by suitable Nitoflor resin-based floor coatings. Nitoflor FC130, a water-based, matt finish epoxy floor coating, is commonly applied as overcoat protection.

Chemical Resistance and Maintenance

Uncoated Cemtop XD surfaces may be cleaned with rotary scrubbing machines. However, the product should not be cleaned with strong acidic or alkaline-based cleaning agents. For areas without resin coating, standard cleaning protocols apply, but harsh chemical cleaners must be avoided.

Storage and Supply

Cemtop XD has a shelf life of 2 years from the date of manufacture if kept in original, unopened bags. The product is supplied in 18kg bags in both grey and white formulations.

Each 18kg bag yields approximately 10.6 litres when mixed with 3.25 litres of water, covering approximately 1.75m² at 6mm thickness.

Safety Considerations

Cemtop XD is classified as not hazardous for Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS) in accordance with the Australian Inventory of Industrial Chemicals, containing <0.1% RCS. The product must be protected from freezing for 48 hours after placement and from direct sunlight and drying winds during application and the initial curing period.

Environmental and Temperature Restrictions:

• Minimum surface temperature: 10°C during application
• Protection required: Freezing for 48 hours; direct sunlight and drying winds during curing
• For temperatures exceeding 25°C: Contact Fosroc for advice

Incompatibilities and Limitations

Cemtop XD has documented incompatibility with Nitoflor PA application, which should be noted during product selection and system design. If the concrete floor strength is below specified threshold values, Fosroc technical advice should be sought before application.
