Product Intelligence

Nitoflor N - Novolac Epoxy Floor Coating

Overview

Nitoflor N is a highly chemically resistant novolac epoxy clear binder coating and topping system previously known as Durafloor N. It is specifically engineered for applications requiring exceptional chemical resistance and wear durability across concrete, steel, and masonry substrates.

Key Applications

Nitoflor N is principally designed for acid-proofing within the mining processing industry and similar installations where high chemical resistance is essential. The product is ideal for environments subject to aggressive chemical spillages and where high wear resistance is required. It functions as a versatile system that can be applied as a clear coating or combined with various fillers to produce different application methods, such as trowel floors.

Advantages

  • High chemical resistance suitable for aggressive chemical environments
  • Suitable for multiple substrates including concrete, steel, and masonry
  • Fast cure properties enabling rapid application schedules
  • Excellent wear and abrasion resistance for high-traffic areas
  • Versatile application techniques allowing flexibility in installation methods

Physical Properties

As a Clear Coating

  • Mixing ratio: 3:2 (base to hardener by volume)
  • Pot life: 30 minutes @ 23°C
  • Tack free time: 4 hours @ 23°C
  • Maximum overcoat time: 24 hours @ 23°C
  • Trafficable: 24 hours @ 23°C
  • Full cure: 7 days @ 23°C
  • Compressive strength: 85 MPa @ 7 days (clear coating); 60 MPa @ 7 days (trowel floor)
  • Service temperature: Up to 120°C depending on application
  • VOC content: 28g/litre
  • Solids content: 100%

As a Trowel Floor Application

When Nitoflor N is mixed with Nitomortar F4 fillers (1.5 litre base + 1.0 litre hardener + 12.5 litres fillers), it produces a dense, 5mm seamless screed with superior wear resistance properties.

Chemical Resistance

Nitoflor N demonstrates comprehensive chemical resistance across a wide range of aggressive substances:

Excellent resistance to:

  • Sulphuric acid (various concentrations: 25%, 75%, 98%)
  • Nitric acid (multiple concentrations)
  • Acetic acid (25%)
  • Lactic acid (various concentrations)
  • Hydrochloric acid
  • Phosphoric acid
  • Sodium hydroxide (up to 50%)
  • Saturated salt solutions
  • Toluene, xylene, and ammonium nitrate

Chemical Resistance Rating System:

  • R = Resistance to long-term immersion (up to 60 days)
  • Rc = Resistance to regular contact (discolouration may occur)
  • S = Resistance to short-term immersion (24 hours)
  • Sc = Resistance to short-term immersion with possible discolouration
  • Os = Resistance to occasional splashes
  • X = Not resistant

Note: Chemical resistance definitions are based on regular and sound housekeeping practices.

Slip Resistance Performance

System Configuration Wet Pendulum Test Rating
Nitoflor N (no grit) P1
Nitoflor N saturated with Nitoflor Anti-Slip Grains 02 P5
Nitoflor N with Nitoflor Anti-Slip Grains 02 @ 20g/m² P3

Slip-resistant finishes can be achieved by applying anti-slip aggregates between two coats of the clear coating system.

Standards Compliance

  • AS/ISO 9239.1-2003 Reaction to Fire Tests for Floorings
  • AWTA Test Report 21-001312:
    • Critical Heat Flux (CHF): 9.5 kW/m² (Mean)
    • Smoke Value: 172 %.min (Mean)

Application Methods

Clear Coating Application

  • Coverage: 4 to 5m²/litre per coat
  • Mix yield: 2.5 litres (1.5 litre base + 1.0 litre hardener)
  • Applied by brush or roller
  • Two coats recommended for optimal finish

Trowel Floor Application

  • Coverage: 3m² @ 5mm thickness
  • Mix yield: 14.9 litres (2.5 litres binder + 12.5 litres fillers)
  • Applied to wet or tacky (not tack-free) primed surfaces
  • Compacted to achieve a dense seamless screed
  • Finished to desired texture with steel trowel

Surface Preparation Requirements

Concrete Substrates

  • Must be sound, clean, dry, and free from contaminants
  • Requires hydro-blasting, captive shot blasting, or grit blasting
  • Should be blasted with high-pressure water (<3000psi) or steel shot to remove weak surface layer
  • Vacuum cleaning required prior to application
  • Wet sand blasting and grinding may be necessary in bund areas or uneven substrates

Steel Surfaces

  • Minimum Sa 2½ standard of cleanliness (blast cleaned)
  • Angular profile amplitude of at least 75 microns recommended for high-build applications
  • Application should occur as quickly as possible after preparation to prevent corrosion

Priming

  • All substrates must be primed with Nitoflor N clear binder or Nitomortar 903
  • Minimum wet film thickness of 150 microns required
  • Multiple coats may be necessary depending on substrate porosity
  • For high-build applications on vertical or overhead surfaces, seeding the wet primer with clean grit prevents sliding

Limitations

  • Should not be applied on surfaces with rising damp or relative humidity greater than 80% (moisture content >5%)
  • Application restricted when substrate or ambient temperature is below 10°C or ambient relative humidity exceeds 85%
  • Enhanced chemical and stain resistance requires a finishing coat of Nitoflor N Clear Coating when fillers are used
  • Best performance depends on sound housekeeping practices

Supply Information

Product Container Size Product Code

  • Keep in dry storage in original, unopened packs
  • Maintain temperature range of 5°C to 30°C
  • Proper storage ensures product integrity and performance characteristics prior to application

Important Safety Information

  • A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is available from the Fosroc website
  • A Technical Data Sheet (TDS) providing comprehensive application and performance information is available
  • Both documents must be read carefully prior to use, as application or performance data may change
  • In emergency situations, contact any Poisons Information Centre (phone 13 11 26 within Australia) or a doctor for medical advice

Coverage Notes

The coverage figures provided are theoretical. Due to wastage factors and substrate variability, practical coverage may be reduced. Application of the system on a small test area on-site prior to commencing full works is highly recommended to confirm actual slip resistance and coverage.
