Nitoflor HD-S System: Technical Details and Specifications

Product Overview

Nitoflor HD-S System is a low sheen liquid floor hardener and densifier designed for concrete floors. It represents an improved formulation of the previous Durafloor HD-S product, engineered to provide enhanced appearance and reduced maintenance requirements compared to standard hardener products.

System Composition

The Nitoflor HD-S System is a two-component system consisting of:

  • Nitoflor HD: A penetrating lithium silicate treatment applied as the first component
  • Nitoflor HD-S: Applied as the second component to achieve defined sheen levels and improve stain resistance

Nitoflor HD-S has a VOC content of 33g/litre, making it an environmentally friendly solution for floor hardening applications.

Key Features and Advantages

  • Hardening and densification: Hardens and reduces dusting of concrete surfaces
  • Enhanced appearance: Provides defined, low sheen levels with improved aesthetics
  • Stain resistance: Offers improved stain resistance compared to standard Nitoflor HD
  • Durability: Delivers durable performance with long-lasting surface protection
  • Easy maintenance: Simple to clean and maintain with minimal upkeep requirements
  • Polished concrete compatibility: Can complement diamond grinding processes for polished concrete finishes
  • Environmentally friendly: Solvent-reduced formulation suitable for various environments

Application Coverage and Design Criteria

Application Rate: Nitoflor HD-S is designed for application at approximately 30 to 40 m²/litre per coat, depending on surface porosity and desired sheen level.

Minimum Coat Requirement: A minimum of two coats of Nitoflor HD-S must be applied to achieve the desired sheen level. Multiple coats may be required depending on the concrete's porosity and roughness.

Nitoflor HD Application Rate: The initial Nitoflor HD coat is applied at approximately 7 to 10 m²/litre.

Primary Applications

The Nitoflor HD-S System is suitable for use on any new or existing internal concrete or masonry surface, with typical applications including:

  • Manufacturing facility floors
  • Warehouse floors
  • Restaurants and retail environments
  • Supermarkets and grocery stores
  • Storage facility floors

Surface Preparation Requirements

For Hardened Concrete

Nitoflor HD must be applied to sound, clean, dry concrete that is:

  • Free of previous coatings
  • Free of grease, oil, dirt, and adhesives
  • Free of laitance and other surface contamination

The surface must be thoroughly cleaned with neutral cleaner and fresh water to remove contaminants. The surface must be completely dry before initial application.

For Fresh Concrete

Nitoflor HD can be applied as a stand-alone hardener/densifier to freshly laid concrete as soon as:

  • There is no free water on the surface
  • The concrete is firm enough to walk on

However, subsequent application of Nitoflor HD-S must be delayed until the concrete has cured for 28 days.

Application Instructions

Nitoflor HD Application

  • Agitate Nitoflor HD before use
  • Apply using a low-pressure sprayer or scrubber at approximately 7 to 10 m²/litre
  • Keep the floor wet with material for 20 minutes
  • If an area begins to dry, re-mist with material
  • Do not add water to the material or to the surface being treated
  • Allow the surface to dry without puddling by brooming if necessary
  • Clean up excess material with a scrubber after drying
  • Allow at least 2 hours drying time before applying Nitoflor HD-S
  • Surface must be "bone dry" before initial Nitoflor HD-S application

Nitoflor HD-S Application

  • Apply using a low-pressure airless sprayer
  • Spread out with a 100% polyester micro-fibre applicator
  • Material will appear milky when initially sprayed but should appear clear when spread with the applicator
  • Apply first coat at approximately 30 to 40 m²/litre
  • Increase coverage rate on highly polished floors
  • Allow to dry for at least 30 minutes between coats
  • Apply subsequent coats at the same application rate
  • Minimum of two coats required
  • Allow at least one hour drying time after final coat before foot traffic
  • The system must be free from water contact for at least 72 hours at ambient temperature to allow proper curing
  • After 72 hours, the surface can be damp mopped or scrubbed with an auto scrubber and neutral cleaner

Special Application: Polished Concrete

The Nitoflor HD-S System can complement polished concrete processes. Apply Nitoflor HD-S after hardening and grinding/polishing the concrete to yield:

  • Improved sheen level
  • Improved stain resistance

Product Supply

Product Size Product Code
Nitoflor HD 5 litres FC605105-5L
Nitoflor HD 20 litres FC605105-20L
Nitoflor HD-S 5 litres FC605110-5L
Nitoflor HD-S 20 litres FC605110-20L

Storage Requirements

  • Keep in dry store in original, unopened packs
  • Do not allow to freeze
  • Keep container closed when not in use
  • Do not transfer material into other containers for storage or disposal

Maintenance

Surface should be regularly cleaned with a pH neutral cleaner to achieve optimum performance and longevity. Regular maintenance coats of Nitoflor HD-S will help retain the floor sheen level.

Important Limitations

  • Nitoflor HD and Nitoflor HD-S will not penetrate existing curing compounds or other coatings on concrete; these must be removed by mechanical means such as diamond grinding
  • Coverage and consumption rates will vary depending on porosity and roughness of concrete
  • Stain resistance and sheen level will vary depending on porosity and roughness
  • Liquid hardeners work by reacting with Calcium Hydroxide in concrete; if concrete has been rain-affected or overworked during laying, there may not be sufficient Calcium Hydroxide present for proper reaction
  • These products will not fix bad concrete
  • Material cannot be applied in below freezing temperatures
  • Adverse weather conditions or humidity may affect cure time and application rates

Environmental and Safety Considerations

  • Material cannot be applied below freezing temperatures
  • Humidity will delay cure time; use fans to reduce humidity during curing
  • Humidity should be reduced during the 72-hour cure period for optimal results

Cleaning

All equipment should be cleaned with soap and warm water.
