Nitocote SN502 - Penetrating Silane/Siloxane Concrete Treatment
Nitocote SN502 is a single-component penetrating silane-siloxane system which significantly reduces the absorption of water and water borne salts, whilst allowing the passage of water vapour out from the substrate. Ideal for protecting atmospherically exposed reinforced concrete structures including those in coastal environments. Reduces water and chloride intrusion, penetrates into porous substrates, non-staining, and provides 92% reduction in chloride ion penetration (NCHRP 244 Standard).

Product Intelligence
Nitocote SN502: Penetrating Silane-Siloxane Concrete Treatment
Product Overview
Nitocote SN502 is an economical, penetrating hydrophobic silane-siloxane treatment specifically formulated to protect atmospherically exposed reinforced concrete structures from attack by chloride ions and water intrusion. As a single-component system, it offers a clear, non-staining solution suitable for both new and existing structures, including those in challenging coastal environments.
Key Characteristics
Description and Composition
Nitocote SN502 is a single-component penetrating silane-siloxane system that penetrates into porous substrates and reacts to produce a bonded hydrophobic lining to the pores. The product works by significantly reducing the absorption of water and water-borne salts while simultaneously allowing the passage of water vapor gas to escape from the substrate, maintaining the breathability of the structure.
Chemical Properties
The product does not discolor the substrate under normal circumstances; however, it may darken some polymer-modified substrates and white cement. Trial application on inconspicuous areas is recommended before full-scale deployment.

Application Instructions
Surface Preparation
All surfaces must be thoroughly prepared before application:
- Dry condition required: Surfaces should be completely dry and free from contamination
- Contaminants to remove: Oil, grease, loose particles, decayed matter, moss, algal growth, laitance, and all traces of mold release oils and curing compounds
- Recommended preparation method: Light grit-blasting of the surface is the best practice
- Biocide treatment: Where moss, algae, or similar growths have occurred, proprietary biocide treatment should be applied after the grit-blasting process
Application Procedure
To obtain the penetrating properties of Nitocote SN502, correct application rates and overcoating times must be strictly observed.
| Application Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Number of coats | 2 flood coats |
| Application rate per coat | 5 m²/litre (0.2 litres/m²) |
| Total application rate | 0.4 litres/m² |
| Overcoating time | 2 hours @ 20°C |
| Application method | Portable spray equipment (knapsack-type) |
| Drying time before continued work | Minimum 2 hours @ 20°C |
Application technique: Nitocote SN502 should be applied in two flood coats until the recommended total application rate of 0.4 litres/m² has been achieved. This is best accomplished using portable spray equipment of the knapsack-type.
Surface Treatment Limitations
- Minimum substrate temperature: Application should not commence if the temperature of the substrate is below 2°C
- Water contamination: Nitocote SN502 should not be contaminated with water
- Substrate compatibility: The product may darken some polymer-modified substrates and white cement; trial areas are recommended
Advantages and Benefits
Nitocote SN502 delivers multiple protective and practical benefits:
- Reduces water and chloride intrusion into concrete structures
- Deep penetration into porous substrates for comprehensive protection
- Non-staining application maintains aesthetic appearance
- Suitable for windy conditions and high temperatures without compromise
- Increases freeze-thaw resistance of concrete
- Minimizes efflorescence formation on treated surfaces
- Chemically resistant to ice melting compounds, fuels, oils, and atmospheric contaminants
- Allows water vapor transmission from the structure, maintaining breathability
Suitable Applications
Nitocote SN502 is suitable for protecting:
- All types of reinforced concrete structures
- Cementitious substrates and masonry
- New and existing structures
- Coastal and marine environments where chloride attack is a concern
- Structures subject to atmospheric exposure and weathering
Storage and Shelf Life
Nitocote SN502 has a shelf life of 36 months when kept in a dry store in the original, unopened containers away from sources of heat and naked flames. If stored at high temperatures and/or high humidity conditions, the shelf life may be reduced.
Product Supply
| Product | Product Code | Container Size |
|---|---|---|
| Nitocote SN502 | FC855145-20L | 20 litre |
| Fosroc Solvent 10 | — | 4 and 20 litre drums |
Coverage Information
| Specification | Coverage Rate |
|---|---|
| Theoretical coverage | 5 m²/litre/coat; 0.2 litres/m²/coat |
Important note: These coverage figures are theoretical. Due to wastage factors and the variety and nature of possible substrates, practical coverage figures will be reduced.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Nitocote SN502 should be removed from tools and equipment using Fosroc Solvent 10 immediately after use to prevent material hardening and ensure equipment longevity.
Technical Documentation and Safety
A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is available from the Fosroc website and should be read carefully prior to use, as application or performance data may change over time. In emergency situations, contact any Poisons Information Centre (phone 13 11 26 within Australia) or a doctor for advice.
